Jeremy, Thanks for sharing. I was thinking about getting a new Apple watch, but I've struggled with the fact that I have a few nice dress/sport watches that I never wear anymore because I would miss the fitness tracking. Thanks for introducing WHOOP -- gonna give it a try, now I can track via WHOOP on one arm and have my dress watches on the other. I've had the Athletic Brewery beers and just saw that the local brewery that I can walk to has it on tap, so I'll be doing more of these. Not ready to be exclusive, but it is nice to have the choice. Maybe that will change for me in October too? Stay well...
Appreciate your thoughts here, Doug. The WHOOP continues to teach me a lot even after over two years of using it. I too had an Apple Watch before and my biggest issue was the battery and the massive amount of distractions it caused. The WHOOP being without a screen is a huge benefit in my mind. And glad to hear you’ve found a taproom with Athletic! I’ve been to their brewery in Stratford a few times and always love to get some new pilot series on tap there.
Thanks for this inspiration, Jeremy. I'm sitting in the airport right now feeling very hungover and thinking it's time for a change. The Whoop sounds like a great purchase. I'm also considering the Oura ring.
Oof. Don’t I know that feeling. Nothing worse that having to get on a plane hungover. Hope you hydrated up!
I really like the Whoop, and I know others who have found the Oura and the newest Apple Watch better. Someone once said that An unexamined life is not worth living, or something like that. Data helped solidify what I was already feeling - that it was time for a change. And not having a hangover after a long weekend allowed me to get in a 5:30am yoga class before the rest of the family was up. I call it the “nouveau classic dad” move.
Appreciate that, Kevin. I know you’re not the only one having those thoughts from the past year. A comment from a couple posts ago made reference to Cutback Coach, which I’ve heard good things about if interested.
I used cutback coach for 2.5 months and had a lot of success. Not having a drink during the week used to be a struggle. The habit was so ingrained. I've since been able to curb weekday drinking, but I still find it a challenge to avoid binge drinking on weekends and holidays.
I appreciate your openness on this, Andrew. Before I cut out alcohol completely, I did a really decent job of limiting it during the week only to make up for it on the weekend. I found that cutting it out during certain work functions really helped as it was almost expected to drink, but by zigging when others zagged, I was able to build confidence and didn’t have a hangover during the early morning sessions. Instead, I could truly own my mornings and explore the area with a nice run. I then incorporated that into my personal travel. There’s something about a sunrise that always gets me and hangovers naturally cut that opportunity.
I think there is a super tactical take away here too - some things are hard to turn away from and the secret might just be finding a less traditional way of talking yourself into that turn.
Also - goldschlagger followed by tequila. Holy shit.
Thanks, BG! And I love that take on it. I hadn’t thought about it that way, but it’s absolutely true. Sometimes we need to take a different path up the mountain.
And yes, that night was one I somehow remember more than I should. Did I mention losing my coat in the upstate New York winter that night on the walk home? Oof.
It is... Non standard but a word meaning regardless which is hilarious.
Great post. I have learned alcohol is not a beast of burden for me. I never overdo it and I collect wine and appreciate the painting of a meal to the flavor profile of a given grape.
Luckily my addiction is discipline which is something I've come to appreciate in my own lifestyle choices.
Re: irregardless - ha! Apparently the first use of it went back to 1795. Who knew?
Re: your thoughts - first, I appreciate them. Second, I remember vividly when you said something similar to me when we were out in the city a few years ago and it stuck with me and made me question my relationship with alcohol more than I had. Third, I love that last line! Cheers!

Great work. It’s something I’ve been thinking about a lot over the last year …

Amazing post, Jer. Really inspiring candor.

So glad, and so proud! Written brilliantly.
